Our Contribution to the Phoenix Homeless Community
Homelessness in Phoenix, AZ
Approximately one out of every 184 Arizonans are homeless. With as much as 30% of those being children and teens, the problem is especially troubling. The homeless are at a much higher risk for:
- Serious health complications, including malnutrition, tuberculosis and HIV
- Being victims of violence
- Overexposure to extreme weather
- Serious injury such as head trauma
There is nothing easy about being homeless. Up to 40% are disabled and cannot help themselves alone.
Helping Where it Counts
One Bag at a Time is an organization started by the Hobaica family that contributes to the Phoenix, AZ community by joining up with Boy Scouts of America and providing essentials for those in need. We pass out bags of toiletries and other helpful items near homeless shelters in the area.
It’s great to see all the smiles when the bags are accepted!
The Inspiration
Andy Hobaica and Ted Young are the founders of One Bag at a Time. Andy’s father, Louis Hobaica, generated the spark that began it all by teaching Andy from a very young age about the importance of giving back.
“I just loved doing it,” Andy says, “I love helping people.”
Our Donation Goals
We are always collecting items to include in the next distribution event and would thoroughly appreciate any contribution to our cause.
You can donate physical items such as:
- Toothbrushes/Toothpaste
- Feminine Hygiene Products
- Combs
- Razors
- Soap
- Deodorant
- Snack Packs (i.e. crackers, chips, granola bars, fruit pouches)
- Water
Or, if you’d prefer to send us monetary donations so that we can purchase the most needed items ourselves, that works too! Your donations are tax-deductible, and if you have any questions, you are welcome to view our receipts to see how your contribution has been spent on bettering the community.
